iOS 26 Breaks iCloud Sync

The mechanisms used by the Birthday Boss app to support iCloud Sync have been broken/dropped/removed in iOS 26.

This change in iOS 26 doesn't just break the sync operations between the app on multiple devices, but it blocks access to the data completely, which results in the app presenting 'No Events' on the updated device after the update.

App Update

A new version of the app has been submitted to Apple for review and will soon be available for you to download for devices running iOS 17 through to iOS 26.

This version will automatically disable the app's iCloud Sync functionality on devices running iOS 26+ and it will use the on-device data-backup to re-populate the app's event-list when it is first launched.

Devices running iOS versions prior to iOS 26 will continue to store and sync data in iCloud while those running iOS 26 will be isolated and maintain their own separate list of events.

Recovery Instructions

If you cannot wait for the new version of the app to be available, the following instructions can be used to mitigate the potential data-loss.

A) If you have not yet updated to iOS 26 (but are planning to) then you need to do the following in order to

avoid data-loss:

BEFORE UPDATE:

  1. Launch the birthday boss app, access the Settings screen, and then navigate to the Data screen from there.

  2. Touch the 'Create Backup' button and when prompted to 'share' the backup choose the 'Save to Files' option and save the backup file in some place where you can find it later.

AFTER UPDATE:

  1. Launch the device's main Settings app, navigate to the Apps screen, and then access the Birthday Boss section from there.

  2. Turn ON the switch titled 'Disable Sync', exit the Settings app, and then restart the device.

  3. When the device finishes restarting, launch the Files app and navigate to where the backup file was saved in step 2) above.

  4. Touch on the backup file and it will launch the birthday boss app and present a prompt for importing the data.

  5. Choose either the Merge or Replace option and the data should be restored.

B) If you have already updated to iOS 26 and have lost access to your previously existing data then you can try to use your latest backup to recover:

  1. Launch the device's main Settings app, navigate to the Apps screen, and then access the Birthday Boss section from there.

  2. Turn ON the switch titled 'Disable Sync', exit the Settings app, and then restart the device.

  3. When the device finishes restarting, launch the birthday boss app, access it's Settings screen, and then the Data screen.

  4. Touch on the listed backup under the BACKUPS heading -- DO NOT TOUCH THE 'Create Backup' BUTTON -- and from the presented menu choose to Share the backup -- THE Restore OPTION WON'T WORK -- and then choose the 'Save to Files' option and save the backup file in some place where you can find it later.

  5. Exit the birthday boss app, launch the Files app, navigate to where you saved the backup in step 4) above and touch it.

  6. Touching the backup file will then launch the birthday boss app and prompt you to either Merge or Replace the data; choose either option and whatever data was in the backup will be restored.
